I want to photograph cars and motorcycles at upcoming events this summer. Do I need to get consent to post and sell photos on my website. There will be no recognizable people in the photos, but cars and motorcycles maybe recognizable do to license plates, and custom paint jobs.
You do not require a release of cars and motorcycles etc. since they are on display at a public showing for editorial purposes but you want to sell the images. This law can vary from state to state so you should get one if you can because you might not know when you will need it later.

Yes, You will need a property release form if they are for profit.
If you are using it for personal gain and in this case it does not seem to be under the guise of news then I do not see any grounds you can claim that you are entitled to full rights to these pictures. Some may argue if they are on public grounds you may have rights. But it certainly will not protect you from any lawsuit or demand for compensation that may arise in case someone doesn’t see it your way.
If you have a property release and offer to exchange it for pictures you take you may be able to protect yourself in in a manner that will protect you. If you do it this way make sure you follow up with the prints!

It depends on how you want to use the images. The publisher won’t need a property release for publishing editorially such as a newspaper. If it is for just about any other type of publishing you will need a release. If you are putting them on your website you are the publisher. But you can also balance this with the likelihood of their being problems. To be Honest I have photographed numerous car shows and events some even fetish shows at clubs and posted them online without ever having a problem. I’ve almost always asked permission, but not gotten anything in writing. I have also had models who have signed releases and changed their minds about having their images online and in some cases begrudging taken them down. It is just about being nice and courteous. Most people will be very happy to have their images taken most people are happy to show off their cars. And to have them on a website will make them even happier.
