My dad was in an accident - he says he didnt hit his head, and there are no visual signs of damage. He wants to sell it - which I am deeply oppossed to. I seem to recall from somewhere that even if a helmet hasn’t been through an impact that it might not be safe to wear again.
What do you guys say?
Pull the liner from the helmet and inspect the foam on the inside. The foam in motorcycle helmets is designed to collapse on impact which absorbs the energy and takes it away from the head. If there are no marks on the foam or the outer shell, the helmet should be fine. If there are any signs of the foam collapsing anywhere or outer scratches, the helmet should be retired. The same rules apply to bicycle helmets as well.
If your father decides to sell the helmet, regardless of whether there are any visible signs, he should state clearly that the helmet was involved in an accident.

don’t sell it unless you disclose it was worn during and accident.
It should be destroyed, but you may be able to find a buyer willing to buy it at a discount rate. To not mention it would be unethical, and just plain wrong. Bikers should take care of each other, not try to put one over on someone.

If the helmet wasn’t in contact with the ground, ther’s no reason to discard it. It is still useable. Glad he wasn’t injured.

it depends if it has a crack on the inside and i wouldn’t plan on selling it because of lawsuits but if the helmet flexes on the point of impact i wouldn’t wear it, and i have flipped my fourwheeler on a steep grade and hit my head on a rock and all that happened was a scratch on the paint and it’s fine so just look on the inside under the padding

You heard right, even though your dad says that he didn’t
hit his head he may have done so. I was involved in an
accident (car) and my head put a huge dent in the window
frame, I had no recollection of hitting my head but the frame
proved otherwise.
Replace the helmet, betters safe than sorry.

Throw it away and buy a new one. Even though your Dad doesn’t believe his helmet contacted the ground, that is highly unlikely, and he may not remember it, or even have been aware of the contact. It is just not worth the risk to re-use it, and to sell it to an unsuspecting biker is just plain wrong. Even if there is no apparent damage, a small impact can destroy the inner core of the helmet, which is really what protects you head, rendering it useless. Here’s a little food for thought, by the way: if there is no problem with the helmet from the accident, why does he want to sell it? Hmmm.

Hi,
Throw it in the thrash can or turn it over and plant a nice flower in it. = ) Once it has been in accident or even if you drop it really hard on the ground you should always replace your helmet.

I’ve never cracked a helmet. At least that’s what they told me in the hospital. You DON’T have to crack a helmet to sustain a head injury. I have seizures now because of head injuries and can’t ride. $10 helmet for a $10 head. Trash the helmet and get him a new one.
